Why is your granite cracking?

When your granite counter was made the fabricator strengthened the sink rails by cutting a slot in your granite counter, and inserted a steel rod. The slot was then filled with resin to keep it in place. Over time as the caulk around your sink broke down, or your faucets leaked, or by a combination of factors, moisture made it to the rod and it began to rust. The rusting of your rod caused it to expand and push the granite apart. The greater the oxidation the greater the expansion. Once the oxidation was complete in an area of the rod it disintegrated but because the steel rod in your counter is 36-48 inches long there was more metal to rust and so the crack quickly grew as more areas of the rod expanded.

This is why the granite cracks in a straight line across your sink.

Our 5-step repair method sounds simple but there are a lot of nuances to your granite crack repair that only Sureshine can provide.

Break or cut your sink rail to expose as much of the rusting steel rod as possible.

Cut the rod to remove as much of it as possible. Sometimes we are able to remove it all if we can loosen it from the resin holding it in.

Reassemble the sink rail using only permanent max strength Epoxy or Urethane adhesive manufactured for repairs like this. We then color-match the crack and blade lines as much as possible.
Grind the repair area flat to prepare for polishing. Polish the surface and detail the crack as only Sureshine can to make it blend as much as possible with the surrounding counter.

Recaulk your sink and backsplash section as required for maximum waterproof protection. Reseal the repair area to aid in stain resistance in that area. Ask about Polishing and Sealing the rest of your counters.

One Year Warranty

Every granite counter serviced by Suershine is warrantied against cracking for a period of one year from the day of the completion of the project. During the warranty period, you must keep your caulk intact and make sure that your faucets do not leak.

Because of the premium adhesive and methods that we use we believe your repair will last for the life of the counter under normal use.

Caring for your granite in Huntington Beach, CA

1

Wip up and remove spills immediately if possible. Oils and other staining liquids will be resisted by the sealer but over time can work their way in. If you get a dark spot or a stain from oil use a degreaser immediately and allow to dry. If the sain does not come out, call Sureshine to discuss how to perform a DIY Stain Removal.

2

Wipe the countertop daily using a damp microfiber cloth or soft sponge with warm water and a small amount of pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads or cleaners with harsh chemicals like bleach, as these can wear down the sealant over time. After cleaning, rinse the surface with clean water to remove soap residue, and dry it with a soft microfiber towel to maintain the granite’s natural shine.

3

While granite itself is resistant to acids like vinegar, it’s still best to avoid long exposure to acidic or oily substances, which can penetrate the sealant. Use coasters and cutting boards for items like oils, juices, and cooking pots to reduce the risk of staining or heat damage. In the event of a spill, blot the area immediately to prevent absorption, especially with liquids like coffee or wine that can stain over time.

4

After cleaning, spray or apply the polish and spread it evenly with a microfiber cloth. Buff the surface gently in circular motions to achieve a smooth, glossy finish. Polishing not only enhances the appearance but also makes the countertop more resistant to fingerprints and smudges.
