Before you have your travertine showers polished you should know a few things about your travertine.

Why is your travertine shower damaged?

Travertine is a crystalline stone composed of calcium carbonate. The same chemical is found in common antacids like Tums® and Rolaids®. What makes these antacids effective is their ability to react with acid in the stomach. This is not such a great thing on our travertine shower, counters, and floors.

Acid-containing liquids create marks on your travertine called etches. These marks appear to be drip marks on travertine walls or cup rings on travertine counters and no matter what you do, you can’t remove them without some sort of refinishing. Etches are sometimes called watermarks. Etches look like dirty spots that cannot be removed. A common cause of shower damage is using the wrong cleaner.

A common cause of problems on travertine shower walls is the use of acid-based cleaners. Always make sure your housekeeper is using the right cleaner.

Sureshine specializes in refinishing, polishing, and sealing travertine showers and other natural stone surfaces in Huntington Beach, CA to look like new again. We do this using specialized abrasives and polishing powders to bring your travertine showers and other travertine surfaces back to new.

There are several finishes available for travertine surfaces but there are four main finishes.

Travertine Matte

A Matte finish is a low to no-shine finish. This means that when you look straight into the surface you will not see a reflection. You will see a little bit of reflection when looking across the surface at windows and other light sources. When looking at the surface the movement and veining in the stone is more prevalent. This is a common finish for travertine countertops in Huntington Beach, CA. If you have a honed or matte finish travertine shower, it needs to be sealed regularly to prevent it from developing a mold or mildew problem. It is recommended to make sure the shower has adequate ventilation to dry when not in use.

Travertine Satin

Travertine Satin (Semi-polished) finish is a medium to high shine finish that will show some reflection when looking down into it and a high reflection when looking across it. This is a common finish for some travertine floors as well as countertops in Huntington Beach, CA, more rare in showers but we have created beautiful satin finish shower walls. We will always recommend that your shower floor stay honed to prevent slipping.

Travertine Polished

Travertine Polished Finish is as it sounds. Your travertine shower walls are brought to a high shine using diamond abrasives and polished chemically to achieve depth and clarity. A Polished finish is common on residential and commercial floors and counters as well as travertine showers. Polished travertine showers will require more maintenance and etches can be seen more easily in the shine. Polished travertine is a more formal look but can also lend classic beauty to any space. It is important to squeegee the walls after your shower with a polished travertine shower.

Travertine Leathered

Travertine Leathered finish is a rough or textured finish most commonly done on travertine and natural stone counters in Huntington Beach, CA. A leathered finish is rarer in travertine showers but we have seen it. The leathered finish on your travertine shower is achieved using abrasive brushes that remove the softer parts of the stone while polishing the harder areas of the stone. Leathered finishes come at all levels of shine from matte to polished. A leathered travertine shower surface has an old-world, warm look and feel

Caring for your travertine showers in Huntington Beach, CA

1

Cleaners must be safe for travertine or natural stone surfaces and say it on the label.

If your shower glass is cloudy, consider having it polished and treated with our hydrophobic sealer. This shower glass treatment will keep your shower glass looking great for years. Most customers get 3-5 years out of the service depending on the hardness of their water. This service is a great addition to your travertine shower polishing service or any service. Please ask your consultant or your technician about this valuable service.

2

Travertine showers can harbor mold and mildew when they stay wet for long periods of time, especially when natural bar soaps are used. Using a bleach solution periodically can reduce the mold on the walls. Using ⅛ cup of bleach in a squirt bottle with water, spray onto areas that you think may have mold. Allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes before starting your shower and rinse the area off for two minutes prior to stepping into the shower.

3

Squeegee the walls of your shower after every shower or at least after the final shower of the day. This will remove the water from the surface and prevent water spotting for an extended period. Treat your travertine shower walls like you treat windows and you will reduce your need for future refinishing and save a lot of money.

4

Eliminate the use of bar soap and other solid soaps and refrain from using shower oils. Use glycerin soaps and water-based fragrances. Bar soap is designed to be solid at room temperature so when you lather up and rinse off the residues solidify on the corners and on the walls (when you don’t squeegee) causing soap scum Soap scum is a haven for bacteria and mold so eliminating solid soaps will further reduce your need for future refinishing your travertine shower and save you a lot of money in the future.

5

Use trays and other way to elevate the soap dispenser, shaving cream can, and other containers off the surface so water does not get trapped under them and cause issues. Remove unused bottles from your travertine shower to prevent long-term water exposure damage. Some travertine is sensitive to long-term exposure to moisture, these include green travertine, brown travertine, and some tans. Contact Sureshine if you need to have your shower evaluated for refinishing.
